I saw related post for a 1/2 tri, but can I expect to be ready for the full tri on 20-Sep based on the following? I run a marathon in Dec, and another one at the end of March. I run ~25-40 mi/week, but haven't been swimming or biking in quite a while. One of my arms is very limited for swimming, but I've seen guys w/ only one arm doing this stuff. Better to start w/ a 1/2, or is it possible or probable that I could do a full if I worked hard at it?

Thx!

Well, you do have plenty of time to ramp up to Iron distance if you have been an olympic distance triathlete in the past. At Iron distance the bike is huge though so it worries me a little that you say you haven't been biking in "quite a while". Regardless, I am not sure I would recommend that anyone do the full-monty without doing a half first. In my opinion, and others can jump in here, the gap in magnitude between olympic and half is much larger than the gap between half and Iron distance. Not in distance, obviously, but in everything else--Pace, nutrition, training load, etc. For me olympic distance seems like a race but half and Iron distance are endurance events. To answer your question: I would start with a half.

You can do it. So much of it is being mentally prepared. Check out beginnertriathlete.com for a training schedule and much more information on how to prepare for your first Iron Distance.
