OK,
This will be my 1st full IM and from what I can tell, it will be a 1st for several people. My question is: What do you put in the transition bags? Do you set up any type of typical transition area, or does everything go in the bags? For example: T1 - Bike shoes, Helmet, sunglasses, gloves ? or will you set these up by your bike like any other race? T2- running shoes, cap ect.- will these go in the transition bags or by your bike in your corral?

Generally most Ironmans you put everything for the bike (helmet, glasses, racebelt, jersey, shoes, socks....) in the T1 bag and everything for the run (hat, jersey, socks, shoes..)in the the T2 bag. Generally you don't setup the transitions at the bike like in most shorter distance races. The T1 bag is generally given to you as you enter the Transition tents. You put the wetsuit, goggles, caps...in the T1 bag after you dump out the bike stuff and likewise for T2. They had plenty of volunteer help in the tent to help you with this task, they helped stuff the bag for you. Having said that...last year they did let you set up at the bike (but this is unusual for an IM race)...Hopefully the RD will chime in here to let us know if this will be allowed this year. I actually hope not because this does add to the mess of the bike rack and makes everyone do the same thing. Put up more posts if you don't understand what I just added here!!

Also....welcome to the "club". This will be my fifth IM race. Be prepared to find out how tough you are. If you have trained well you'll be physically tough....but I'm talking how tough 'mentally" you are. You're going to find out about yourself you didn't know before the race. My advice break up the day in segments (swim lap 1, swim lap 2, bike lap 1 , bike lap 2.....) and forget about the total distance. You will be transformed!

Transition Bags will be provided to the Full Iron Distance folks. In addition we will have volunteers in the tents to help with your transition process, very similar to last year. Although we will allow the Half Iron Distance folks to utilize the transition area if it is specifically needed, it is typically not very efficient for them to use. We only had 3 or 4 "halfers" use the tents last year and expect the same this year as well.

Hence, it is expected and assumed that the Half Iron Distance athletes will place most of their equipment at the "rack".

Hope this helps!

Dave
I have down the half the last 2 years at the Redman. I know how it is set up for the half. This year I am doing the full. What I am unsure of is will everything go in the transition bags or will some of it be allowed at the bike rike? Will our helmets, bike shoes, run shoes, sunglasses go in the transiton bags or at the rack?

Thanks Jayhawk. That is how I have allways broke races down in my head. I have done several half iron but never a fulll. Most times the farther into the race I get, the smaller the pieces that I break the race into in my mind. I am sure by the end of the run, I will be just concentrating on making it from aid station to aid station.

tri-dogg,

The transition bags and tents are there for your convenience. You can use them at your discretion. The most significant issue to consider when placing your gear is the amount of "clutter" and potential for "abandoned gear" that may pose a safety hazard or impedement for other athletes and also result in a penalty from the officials.

Make your plans accordingly and use the opportunity to your advantage.

We also made the bags a little bigger in 06 and seemed to do a better job of holding everyone's stuff than the previous year. Just PLEASE make sure everything is LABELED. We try our hardest to get everything back to you. But if there is no name it makes it difficult.
