Don't know if there are changing tents but my question is for the full do you change after each or try and wear the same for the entire event?

There are changing tents. I'd say the answer to your question is individually specific. Some people can race in the same attire for the entire race (I do), while others like to change into a fresh set for each leg. It takes more time to change clothes, but if it makes you more comfortable, go for it. Comfort is #1 priority at this distance. Hope that helps some.

Last year I didn't feel like changing my bike sock and did not put on fresh socks for running, and developed two large blisters on the balls of my feet. I definitely affected my running, and made it easier, at least psychologically, to start wallking. Im will be changing socks this year!! By the by, they do have changing tents so you could completely strip and change if you wanted. Also I had volunteers help me with every facet of the change while in the tent.

My plan so far is to wear my one piece tri suit the entire time.
Hopefully it will be wetsuit legal, so put that on for the swim.
Then I'll just put on shoes, gloves, and helmet for the bike. My feet sweat too much when I wear bike socks, so I end up being pruned for the run, and I get big blisters. So no socks on the bike.
Then after the bike put on my hat and socks (Wright Socks) for the run, with a fresh change of socks in my run special needs bag. |

Explain the special needs bag to me. Is there a place in the run that you can have a equipment bag?

The special needs run bag is at the half way point of the marathon (two loop run course)essentially at the transition area of the race site at the 13 mile mark. Look at the map section of this website for a map location. Its a bag where you check in ahead of time where you can put anything you may need at that critical point. some suggestions: Long sleeved t-shirt if youre running after dark, change of socks, vaseline, gu, jelly beans, etc.....Depending on when you finish the turn around is at a tough psychological part of the race because your' tired, you have to start running away from the finish line and people may be finishing the race.....be prepared for this as being a tough spot,.....DO NOT STOP here, just focus on getting going back out on the course, don't pay attention to the finishline.... the good thing about the special needs back here is that it gives you a task to attend to instead to looking the the finsih...sort of takes your mind off of what's going close to you. Just get the special need job done and get going!!!

Thanks for bringing that to light for me. The temperatures were cool enough at night for a long sleeve shirt? Could you put a change of socks and shoes? Mine get so wet from sweat it might be worth it if it is cooling down at night. I think I should get there around 6-7 pm.

If you're reduced to walking only after dark then it would be potentially cool enough to wear a long sleeve t-shirt. If you're running then long sleeve is not probably necessary. I usually pick it up at the special needs bag and wrap it around my waist and then put it on if needed. Certainly a change of shoes and socks is fine, the bags are big and you could put in alot of stuff. It a good idea.

Do we get our special needs bags back? At IM madison, they just gave whatever was in them to charity? Just want to know if I can put a nice shirt in, or something from goodwill in case I don't need it. Thanks

Nancy,
We will do our very best to pick up and return to a designated area in transiton, all special needs bags.
Although, we cannot promise that you'll get you items returned, we'll give it our best effort.
This issue is addressed more directly in the FAQ's and a picture of the location in transition can be found in the maps section of this site.
Thanks,
Dave

Has anyone else noticed the picture of the girl biking barefoot??? Does this make sense to anyone? 112 miles is a long way!!!! I guess I could figure out why you'd do this in a sprint tri, but not a long course. I can't imagine the thought process. Can anyone enlighten me?

You can see she has her shoes clipped to the pedals but just haven't put them on her feet yet. I think she won the HIM race so speed in T1 was a priority. Noboby would go without shoes.

Yeah, that is Christina Wolfe who dominated the half-iron last year. Her name may sound familiar because she is Justin's wife. It was a good day for the Wolfes. With the stone wall being on her right side, it looks like she is entering T2, so she had just removed her shoes. |

If I want to wear cycling shorts for the half and then I want to wear running shorts, does anyone know if this is a good idea? Are the dressing rooms available for people in the half or do people typically not use them? Just wondering! I just don't think a tri outfit has enough padding for me.

something I have tried--- is to swim in a one piece tri suit (not enough padding for me either) at T1 I slip some good bike shorts on over my tri suit then at T2 I take the shorts off and run in the tri-suit. Don't know if that helps you or not but for me it takes the least amount of time.

The changing tents are proritized for full participants but may also be used by the halfers if necessary. I have done every half in a trisuit only and NEVER had a problem. It saves a lot of time changing to stay in the same outfit for a half. You may need to look into better quality or fit of your trisuit or maybe a better bike fit. Just a suggestion, comfort is very individual.

A little late for you now, but I do/did all my long training rides in either my trisuit or tri shorts and a bike jersey. That way when it comes time to race day, I am used to not having a lot of padding. Now, bike shorts almost feel "too" cushiony.
