Has anyone competed in the Iron Mtn. Man Half Tri on Lake DeGray in Arkansas and if so how does the bike course compare vs. your avg. speed in the Redman?

Well, several of us who plan to do the full or half went down to Arkadelphia this past weekend.
I think I speak for most of us when I say the DeGray course is significantly more difficult than the Redman course. I averaged about the same speed on the DeGray course as what I do on my training rides on the Redman course. My effort based on heartrate was only slightly above my effort for a full IM, so it should be a good estimate. So, I would guess a minimum of 1mph faster on the Redman course. That is comparing the half to full though. Half to half, it might be closer to 2 mph.
However, there are several caveats to these estimates. One, you cannot predict wind speed and wind direction in OKC, and that could impact speed. Also, those are my averages, and I do not know how they correlate up and down the average speed curve. For reference, I averaged around 22.

As for the run course, expect a significantly faster run if you are doing the half. In fact, I am doing the full, and I think DeGray took more out of my legs in 13.1 than Redman will in 26.2. At least I hope.

Hope this helps.

OK, I was swimming tonight and thinking about what I just wrote. I must have been feeling really optimistic when I wrote that because I will not be averaging over 22 mph on the bike course at Redman, so maybe I should rescind my last post.
The DeGray course is tougher, but now that I think about it, it is also deceptively fast (just like Kris K told me). I actually think the speed averages between the two courses will be comparable. However, the uphills at DeGray take more out of your legs, and cause you to hit heart rates you will not see on the Redman course. So even though the speed might be about the same, your legs will probably be fresher at Redman. Also, you do not have a monster climb coming out of T2.
