Trying to plan a trip to OKC for a little training on the course. Wondering how the bike course is on normal days. Is it heavy traffic or would you say it is very rideable alone?

Also the run course is that bikeable during the day or at night? I have heard something about it being around a golf course or through it? Any info appreciated!!

I ride the north section the course solo at least once a week. Coming from the lake, MacArthur is pretty busy. Most people I know ride it in a group. I definitely would not ride it during rush hour(s) or mid-day weekend. Early, early weekend morning or during a non-busy part of the work week day would be your best options, but even then, it's a little too busy for my liking. I won't ride the south part of MacArthur except on race day. Once you get north on MacArthur to Edmond Rd (178th) or Covell Rd (192nd), it gets a lot less busy. There is a middle school where I park and ride from just north of MacArthur and Covell (192nd). I ride from there all the time. It's fairly safe on weekdays and on weekends, but still keep your head up. Most traffic out that way is pretty friendly.

You can bike the run course any time before night time. At that point, the trails are closed. I mentioned in another post that you can't bike 100% of the run course because a small fraction of it goes on a path that is for foot traffic only. But you'll see that there are no surprises on the run course. Once you see about 1 mile of it, you've seen all of it. Only the surrounding scenery changes.

It goes through and around a golf course, but so do city streets. The trails are near the streets. You don't have to duck tee shots or go cyclocross through a bunker or anything. The trails through the course aren't any different than the ones going through grass or woods.

Hope that helps some.

Kris being a car-magnet is a lot more cautious than most of us. I have ridden the entire bike course (including MacArthur) many times on the weekend and have never had an issue with traffic. Just be smart and the cars will stay out of your way.
As for the run course, I was not aware of the path closing at night. In fact, I have been there many times after sunset or before sunrise. However, the path is not lighted, and wariness is advised.

Post when you are coming up and maybe a few of us can meet you.

It's true, I am overly cautious with vehicles. So take that into consideration. For the closing at night, I'm just going off of the signs posted around the lake. I never really paid close attention to them, but I think they say something to the effect of "trail closed after dark except by permit only."

And good idea about letting OKC people know when you come into town. It's always nice to put people to their message board names. But don't help him too much, Phillip, he's in our AG!! ;)

Very tentavely looking at the 7th and 8th of June. It is about a 14 and half hour drive so leaving on Wednesday and maybe sneaking in a marathon in Missouri on Saturday is the temporary plan. I would like to at least maybe see the swim portion and get out and bike the bike and run portions.

I will keep you posted on if this indeed becomes the plan.
