what is the expected water temperature?

Thanks

Axel,

We fully expect the swim to be wetsuit legal.

In 06' we had plenty of warm weather and water prior to race day, but race day water temps were approx 72. Similar conditions existed for the 05' race.

Thanks,

Dave

Are wetsuits required? Was anyone, in the past, not wearing a suit?

I can't speak for the RD, but I can offer my experiences for the last 2 years (once doing the half, the other as a volunteer). '05 was a really hot year, and the water probably would have been comfortable without one. And it wasn't that windy (less chop). In '06, it was windy and rough and the water was colder. As a volunteer in the men's tent, I saw a couple of people who were in thin wetsuits and bibjohns come in shivering and with purple lips. I know at least one of them had to drop out in T1 due to hypothermia. Not to mention it was choppy as all get out last year, so the suit definitely would have been beneficial. So I'd wear one, but...if the water is 77-78, I will probably go without. That's my take on it, which doesn't mean much. ;)

Wetsuits are not required. However, according to USAT standards, they are "legal" if the water temps are below 77 degrees. In each of the last 2 years, we have had several athletes that chose to not wear a wetsuit, even with temperatures of 72 and 70.

Thanks for your response too, Kris.

What is the current water temperature? Does anyone know? I've looked at different fishing reports and one said 87, one said 80, and the other said 88. I'm just nervous about not being able to wear my wetsuit!!!

Diva,

The current water temp as provided by the OKC Water Dept. is 80.1

That is the same temp as this day in 06'. Our days are getting cooler and more rain is in the forecast. Although there is a possibility that we will not be wetsuit legal, based on past years we more than likely will be.

Even if the water temp is over 78 but below 84, I could still wear a wetsuit, right? I just wouldn't be in contention for prizes though. This is my first half and I am just hoping to finish and have the best experience possible!

I guess when it comes to using wetsuits, I guess I am just a wimp! It's my security at the moment since this will be my longest open water swim so far. I am excited though! I've done other tri's but the distances have been shorter and it took me a while to get over my freaking out in the water when I couldn't see the bottom. I guess I got spoiled swimming in a lap pool!

My guess is this will be the most watched thread for the next 11 days. I'm willing to wager that it's at least 79 by now, if not 78 already. I'd say it's a done deal that it will be below 78, it's just a question of by how much. We've had cool temps here lately with little solar radiation on the lake. We're only supposed to have highs in the high 70s/low 80s for the next week. Couple that with the ever-present wind around here and it makes for some rapid cooling. My only concern at this point is whether or not it's 77-78...I get very warm in a full sleeve suit when the temp is that warm. I'm rooting for around 74 or less, but that may be too tall of an order for mother nature.

The 2 other wetsuit legal Ironman's I have done had volunteers to help you strip your wetsuit off as you exited the water. IF, Sept. 22nd is a wetsuit legal race will there be a wetsuit striping area?

I was a wetsuit stripper last year before I moved into the transition tent/area for the remainder of the day. There were plenty of us around for both the half and full to strip (insert joke here). You're covered.

Kris is probably pretty close.

I will post the temp info as soon as I get it from the city. I requested it again yesterday!

Gotta say I swam outside this morning and it was cold. I wished I had my wetsuit. And I'm down in Dallas.

This is what I do.

Swam last week in the Gulf in Florida. Hot, salt water. This morning I was brought back to reality swimming in 76 degree lake water in KC... I broke out the wetsuit :D. I had forgotten how much I like my wetsuit.

BTW... We aren't going to be flooded out by all the rain fall down there are we?

77.1 was the latest. It was definitely 77.something, and I think the something was a 1. But that was 36 inches deep, and race day measurement is 18 inches below, so that could be a slight underestimate. We're close, but not out of the woods yet (for those of you who want a wetsuit race).
