I am contemplating doing the 1/2 iron distance--i have never done a triathlon...i don't have experience on a road bike (i have a dirt bike, but i suppose that would slow one down...?), nor do i swim much at all. I have done a half-marathon. does anyone have suggestions on where to start in terms of training/anything? what kind of gear would i need and are there certain bikes that are recommended (with a decent price)? Are there training groups for (beginner) triathletes in the area...? What do i need to know...? Tips/advice/insights...?

Need a little more info, where do you live currently and if so are you familiar with any training groups around or have anyone to train with to help you out? Are there any sprints or olympic distance tris you could do first to get the hang of it? Do you have a bike at all or any one you could borrow before dropping cash on something you are not sure you are going to like?

I agree with a sprint or olympic before Half Im but it not mandatory. Could do aero bars on a basic road bike you have access to but practice riding them. Need an approved helmet. As for swimming the water temp normally you need a wetsuit, you could survive without one but a newbie swimmer withoout alot of open water experience a wetsuit is better, they[re alittle faster and your more bouyant also. If where you live has a swim coach a lesson or two on technique is very important. Swimming is very different than running and biking in that it is very technique dependent. Get a training plan Book: Gale Bernhardts Multisport Training Plans, Internet: Beginnertriathlete.com, Trifuel.com, or Buy a Plan: Cruciblefitness.com. Submit more specific questions if this doesn't go far enough
