Information and advice from the REDMAN Massage Therapy Director, Rocky Chen:

"The first step of post-race recovery starts at the Massage Tent. Therapists will be available for the athletes starting from 10:00 AM until midnight and massages will be provided free of charge on race day . A 10-15 minute post-race massage can help reduce your recovery time by up to 50%. Therapists at last year's Redman Triathlon treated over 150 of the 500 athletes who competed in the race."

"Massage therapists will be available for 15-30 minute sessions at the Expo at $1/minute. Individual sessions for 30 minutes (or longer) may be scheduled on the days before AND the day after the race by contacting Rocky Chen ( Massage Director) at rocksbox@gmail.com or at (405) 923-9615."
"Deep tissue massage is NOT recomended within 3-4 days of the event or 1-2 days AFTER the event."

"The best way to find a good massage therapist is by word of mouth. Ask your friends, family members, co-workers, members of your church congregation, etc. Many massage therapists work at health clubs, hair salons, day spas, or work out of their home. "

"Other resources to find certified/licensed massage therapists include the following:
AMTA (American Massage Therapy Association) - http://www.amtamassage.org/findamassage/locator.htm
Center for Pain Management - http://www.orthomassage.net/preferred_practitioners
When looking for a massage therapist, here are some general questions to ask:
- How long have you been working as a MT?
- Are you certified/licensed? (licensing laws vary depending on what city & state you live in)
- How much education do you have? (National minimum is 500-hours)
- Do you have experience working with athletes, specifically endurance athletes like marathoners & triathletes?

Things to consider during a regular massage session:
- Level of comfort - If you don't feel comfortable with your therapist, you may terminate the session at any time. If you aren't comfortable for any reason, it's a waste of your time and money.

- Conversation - Generally, the therapist does not initiate conversation except to check on the comfort level of the client (depth of pressure, temperature of room, etc). However, you are free to talk as much (or as little) as you want during the session.

- Allergic reactions or sensitivities - Please inform your therapist about any allergies and/or sensitivities you may have. Although these occurrences are rare, it's a good idea to check with the massage therapist regarding the type of massage oil, lotion, and/or aromatherapy oil they plan to use during the session. It's best to err on the side of caution.

If you have any general questions about massage therapy, or specific questions about the massage services during Redman weekend, please contact Rocky Chen at
RocksBox@gmail.com or at (405) 923-9615.
