Letter from the President of Redman Triathlon, Inc.
Thomas Hill
Redman means Oklahoma and Oklahoma is synonymous with courage, strength and determination. Triathlon embodies these qualities and the iron distance requires each person to bring everything they have and lay it on the line. We don’t just race, we discover how deep our desire runs and how far we are willing to go to achieve our goals.
Oklahoma City is rapidly becoming a mecca for multisport. Heartland hospitality, central location and outstanding event management combine to make racing in Oklahoma special. You can pay more, and go bigger, but you can’t find better. We created the Redman triathlon for you, the age group athlete. Our goal is to provide the best possible atmosphere for you to accomplish your dream. We won’t rest until we are the best in the world.
The heart and soul of every event are the wonderful men and women that volunteer their time and talent to give you the race of a lifetime. Many of our staff are dedicated multisport athletes who sacrifice their own training and racing goals to put on this great event, and all have a passion for helping you as you reach for the stars. Everyone has a role and each role is critical to bringing the race to you.
Everything starts with leadership. Without vision, the people perish. David Wood returns this year as Executive Director of the 2010 Redman Triathlon. David has a passion for your experience and he invests himself completely in this event to make sure you have a great race. We are extremely blessed to have David and his outstanding executive committee, and together with them I wish you all the best in your journey.
Letter from the Executive Race Director of Redman Triathlon, Inc.
Dave Wood
At the end of the day, accolades don’t get you anywhere, performance and persistence do.
It’s this dictum that drives our dedication to establish and deliver a strong event.
As I reflect on this premise, my thoughts take me back to the awards banquet from the 2006 event. In my brief and emotional (‘cause you athletes are awe inspiring) comments, I mentioned that what drives the committee to hold a quality event is as simple as this: “As a group of athletes, we work toward putting on an event that we would like to participate in ourselves. As long as we hold true to this idea, we can only hope that it meets the expectations of the participating athletes.”
So we keep our heads down, keep focused, and work at delivering an event that not only meets all our expectations (ours, the athletes', and the volunteers'), but even more rewarding, exceeds those expectations.
It’s been an exceptional experience to be part of this event; the most important highlights include:
• Being surrounded all year long by an incredible and committed Planning Committee team, full of energy and ideas, always trying to build a better mousetrap.
• Being given the opportunity to develop friendships with, and be mentored by, outstanding leaders such as Thomas Hill.
• Basking in the glory of the efforts of the thousands of volunteers it takes to pull off an event of this magnitude.
• And, having the opportunity to interact and work with an exceptional and growing group of athletes.
We’re in the midst of preparation for the 2010 event; excited to have the opportunity to join you in another spectacular year of moving and motivational, personal and physical accomplishments.
We hope you will add your name to the list of the official Redman athletes.
Join us for a long day with a huge reward at the end!
Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, vision cleared, ambition inspired, and success acheived. - Helen Keller

Sharon Adduci Barrows Redman Web Based Applications Director/Athletes Meeting Coordinator
Writer, Speaker's Bureau & Motivational Speaker, Trainer, Entrepreneur
Taking a little break from the Investment Advisory and Banking worlds! Working on building websites (next is www.agingathlete.com toward the end of 2009). Served as ARD & Co-RD of various triathlons, including the 2007 Inaugural & Annual Ronald McDonald House Children’s Triathlon. Enjoy half distance triathlon, swimming, biking, road & trail running, mountainbiking, windsurfing, sailing, waterskiing, kneeboarding and any other fun sport Chris can teach me. I hear surfing is next! Have been a Redman participant (competitor or volunteer or both) since race inception. It’s great to brush shoulders with visionaries and leaders like Thomas Hill, Jeff Kragh, Dave Wood and the entire leadership crew. This is the most awesome group of people to work with. It's highly rewarding to give back to the sport and communities that I am so grateful for. I love supporting Dave, the team, & the amazing athletes each year. Enjoy the race!
Sarah Bell 2009 Sunday Run Course Director
I got started in this sport in 2003 and have been in love with it ever since. Redman 2005 was my first ½ Iron and since then I have completed several 140.6 / 70.3 When I’m not swimming, biking or running with my husband Rob, we love taking our eleventy billion dogs on a walk or just chilling out.
Tanya Brown 2009 Olympic/Sprint Transition Director
Middle School Teacher
About me: I am a triathlete. I was originally a runner, but unexpectedly fell in love with triathlon by accident. After volunteering on the run course the first year of Redman, I became inspired by the courage and determination of the athletes (most especially the athletes running until late into the night). The following season, I trained for and completed the full iron distance Redman. This year I will be behind the scenes at the race. It’s a great privilege to be around triathletes who continue to inspire me with their love of the sport. The dedications of those who work tirelessly to make Redman happen, and the spirit of the race, fuel me with endless energy and inspiration.
Steve “Buzz” Bussjaeger Gear Guy
“4MUL8R” Product Development Chemist & VP for H-I-S Paint
Route 66 Triathlon Race Director. Founded this event in 2005 as TRI-OKC’s entry into triathlon arena. Have since added a sprint distance that’s directed by Holly Hicks-Black.
Triathlete: Started in 2004 as a “bottom-feeder” doing sprint distance events. Have since competed at World Long Course Du Championship in 2007 and National Long Course Triathlon Championship in 2008. Just can’t get enough of this stuff.
Staffer/Volunteer: Have been involved with Redman since its inception in 2005. Love every minute of setup and teardown, etc….and especially the part in between when I get to race the course, too!
I owe my wife BIG TIME for letting me spend so much time training, racing, and my other involvements with multisport events.
Rocky Chen Massage Director
Full-time Engineer, Part-time Massage Therapist (occasional triathlete)
Sport: Running (14 years), Triathlon (5 years) Hobbies: Massage therapy (specifically, performance-based athletic massage [injury prevention & rehab])
Little known facts: - Redman 2009 will be my 19th Ironman/Iron-distance Triathlon to work as a Massage Therapist - I have helped to set up the Sports Massage Teams at IM-Louisville, Arizona, Kansas, and New Orleans.
Why I'm involved with the Redman Triathlon: - I've been the Massage Director since its first year and it's been a GREAT event from the very beginning. - It's a hometown event and I enjoy giving back to the OKC triathlon community - Everyone on the Organizing Committee is either a triathlete, a marathoner, or an Ironman, so we each bring our own "race experience"to our areas of responsibility on race day. - Hands-down, this is one of the finest groups of volunteers I have worked with, including several "M-dot" races I've worked around the country.
Chris Cooper 2009 Hotel Shuttle/Airport Liaison
President/COO of Cooper Medical
Chris has been involved in the racing community as an athlete and volunteer since he was in Jr. High!!! He has been sponsored in racing both sailboats and mountain bikes. Chris grew up snow skiing, surfing, sailing, cycling, and riding motocross. He raced mountain bikes for 10 years, achieving an OK State Championship in 2001. This is his first year to be involved with the Redman as the result of cheering Sharon on in Redman 2008. Chris strongly believes in giving back to the athletic community and enjoys doing so.
Chris volunteers each Sunday as a bike mechanic for Hot dogs for the Homeless. This organization feeds 300 homeless people each Sunday; about 30 of whom (and growing) ride bicycles as their means of transportation.
Chris' sports: Windsurfing, long boarding, surfing, sailing, golf, mountain biking, running, trail running, snow skiing, water skiing.
Katharine Cranwell 2010 Who Knows What She'll Do?2006-2009 Athlete Liason 2005 Medical Director I became involved with the REDMAN organization early in it’s first year. In 2005 I was the Medical Director. The day after the event I said to a friend, “Surely doing the Full REDMAN would be easier than coordinating the Medical Tent. What started out as a joke became a reality. Race Director, Dave Wood wanted me to remain on the planning committee, but understood my desire to reach my goal. He gave me the position of REDMAN Pre-Race Logistics Troubleshooter. This gave me the opportunity to work with the event, but have my tasks complete by race day. Seeing the event through a “newbie’s” eyes gave the whole planning committee perspective. For 2007, I’m in charge of “Off-Site Logistics.” I think Dave Wood gave me that job just to stay out of his way. I’m no longer his Troubleshooter, just trouble!
Kevin Hayes 2010 Assistant Race Director (Off Site Logistics-Requisition-Procurement)
A runner by nature but proud to be a part of the Redman.
Ben Haizlip
Post Race Clean-Up Coordinator
AP Biology Teacher Westmoore High School
This is my 5th year to be involved in multisport. I have completed triathlons from sprint distance to the 70.3, and completed my first full iron distance at Redman 2008. In addition to my duties with the Redman, I am the race director for TRI OKC’s Fall Classic Duathlon. I have been married for 12 years in August to my very supportive wife Suzan, and have two daughters, Lauren 5 ½ and Hannah 4.
Holly Hicks-Black Awards/Banquet/Expo Director
Chesapeake Field Representative
I’ve been a triathlete for 5 years now, started in 2004 and used it as my “anti-drug” to stop smoking. I’ve been involved with Tri-OKC since it’s first year of existence, and began on the board of Redman as the race day food coordinator the first year of the race. Redman 2005 was my first iron distance triathlon, and I would like to carry on the tradition for years to come and help re-create the same sense of accomplishment I myself felt crossing that finish line just minutes before midnight...
Thomas Hill Finish Line Director
VP of Kimray Inc.
I am a late life runner. After several marathons I started looking for more of a challenge, so I found multi-sport. My motto is “Survive the swim, stay close on the bike and run them down in the end.” I have completed the Redman Half, the Florida Ironman, the Mother Road 100, and about 25 marathons including Boston (which I qualified for.) I don’t just like the way working out makes you look and feel; I actually like the pain of the workout!
As the founder and organizer of the Redman Triathlon, it might seem obvious as to why I am involved, but my passion is to create world-class events here in Oklahoma City both for us to participate in and to add value to our community. The Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon, the Redman Triathlon, and the upcoming Bricktown International Triathlon are all part of our commitment to make Oklahoma City a mecca for participatory sports.
I have been married to my lovely and understanding wife, Rebecca, for 23 years. We have six children (five boys, one girl) ages 15 down to five. I am currently 45 years old, but I think I am 20 and my wife says I act like I am four.
Always remember, “Without ice cream there would be darkness and chaos.”

Jeffrey Kragh Public Address Co-Director
Psychologist
Why I am involved with Redman: My sports are Triathlon/Duathlon (cycling is my strength), kayaking, surfing (a bit difficult in Oklahoma but I’m ready), and electric guitar. I know electric guitar is not really a sport and I only know about 3 songs…actually the intros to 3 songs…Okay, I only know about 3 chords but they sound cool on my Fender amp with the reverb on and I figured I had to do something to stimulate my brain after all that swimming, biking and running! You know, mind/body balance. My dream is when Payton gets a little older, we try out for that new American Idol Band show. She’s not too keen on the idea yet but I think when I learn a few songs, she’ll change her mind. I think we could go far. As a co-founder of the Redman, I’m proud to have been personally involved each year, whether it’s competing or as the Public Address announcer. I remember returning from the Hawaii Ironman in 2003 and believing that TRI-OKC could put on an Iron Distance (or at least a half-iron) event in OKC. We were a new club then and had put on our first ever event - the Fall Classic Duathlon. As triathletes tend to be over-achievers, we began planning future events. TRI-OKC had the energy, excitement and vision for tremendous growth and the Redman was a big part of the future of Triathlon in Oklahoma. Through the hard work of so many TRI-OKC members and friends as well as the strong support of the city and community, this not only has become a reality, but a huge community success! And it continues to grow each year because of this. It has truly been an amazing honor and thrill having called each and every finisher to cross the line since the inception of the race, and we (my co-announcer Jennifer and I) look forward to another emotion packed finish line in 2009! Be strong athletes! We’ll be waiting for you at the finish line!
Jennifer Kragh Public Address Co-Director
Speech-Language Pathologist
Why I am involved with Redman: The sport I am most passionate about is running. I started running in elementary school and have loved it ever since. The sights, sounds, smell of the outdoors and just the feeling in my body while running (most of the time anyway) are what I love. Not to mention the fact that I have at least one foot on the ground at all times unlike the bike and swim in triathlon! I am happy that our six-year-old daughter, Payton, has shown an interest in running. It is a sport we all do as a family and it is wonderful! I am proud and thrilled to be a part of the Redman Triathlon! Everyone involved in the event works so hard to put it all together and take care of the athletes—it truly is an AMAZING group. I love the role Jeff and I play in the event—Public Address. We get to read all the wonderful athlete bio’s first-hand and really feel like we know the athletes (at least on some level). We learn where they are from, sometimes about family/friends, their goals and reasons for doing the race and even off-the-wall things. We go into race day eager to put faces with names of those we haven’t met and give the athletes the recognition they deserve. While it is an event with several hundred participants, when the athlete is coming down the home stretch it is his or her day alone. We are there to share the athlete’s story with the crowd and welcome him or her home—it truly is an honor and inspiration. Good luck to all this year’s participants—train hard, race hard and we look forward to calling YOUR name at the finish!
Desiree Margagliano Swim Director
Dental Hygenist
Has been a race participant and volunteer since 1989. Although she was a Redman triathlete in 2005, she has been part of the Race Committee as the Swim Co-Director for the last three years!
When she’s not working on teeth, or stuff for the race, she is busy preparing for her other passion, Xterra races! Watch out, this former pro mountain bike rider can pass you up before you know she’s behind you. She enjoys running trails as well! The word on the street too, is that Dez is often sited helping out and encouraging newer athletes as they get involved with triathlon or cycling.
For her bit of civic involvement, Dez travels to Peru each year to work on a medical mission, providing dental services to the villagers.
Beth McCombs 2010 Run Course Director 2005-2009 Run Course Aid Station Coordinator
Domestic Engineer
Beth is a life long athlete! She can hit a mean softball, but has recently become a convert to trail running. As with most things she takes on, she trains with an attitude and has become a fan of many regional races. When she’s not training, she is bossing around her two beautiful daughters and her lousy husband Keith! If you have a good experience on the run course it is because of all of her hard race day work. If you have a less than optimal time it’s probably someone elses fault!!
Keith McCombs 2010 Run Course Aid Station Coordinator 2010 Assistant Race Director Mentor
2005-2009 Assistant Race Director
Passion: I’m a trail runner at heart and enjoy mostly off road races. This includes events such as Pikes Peak, Palo Duro Canyon, Lake McMurtry, Devils Den, and several other events scattered throughout Oklahoma, Colorado, Texas, Arkansas, and Louisiana. Also serve as President of the Oklahoma Trail Running Association.
Scott Mitchell Swim Course Assistant
Aquatic Director for the Edmond YMCA of Greater OKC
Swimmer by nature but my passion is rock climbing and back country hiking. I am involved in the Redman because I want to make it as safe as possible and with my aquatic background I am able to provide that to this event. It is unique to Oklahoma to host an Iron distance event and I think that is something we should hold on to.
Mark Nance Bike Course Director
Director of Audit and Special Investigations
Mark has been doing triathlons for the past two years and developed a love of running and biking while trying to make fitness a priority in his life. Mark also loves to promote Oklahoma City and is proud to be able to give back to his community in volunteering for such a great event. Mark and his wife Shannon share their home with a rambunctious Rhodesian Ridgeback named Symba.
Abbey Payne 2007-2009 SWAG/Sponsorship Director
I became involved with Redman after I completed the 1/2 in 2006 thru 2008. I was able to see firsthand how much went into organizing the event. Furthermore, I enjoyed the race so much I was compelled to become involved.
Sports: Running marathons/triathlons, hiking, skiing and yoga.
Lynn Peterson Bike Course Volunteer Support

Sports: Run, Bike, Backpack, Multisport, Yelling Hobby : Helping stray animals Why I’m Involved: Endurance sports made me know my body well enough to pinpoint irregularities that led to early discovery of ovarian cancer in 1998. Triathlons were my salvation during treatment and recovery. To celebrate the human race, where we are all athletes on a journey to ourselves.
Mike Peterson Bike Course Assistant Director

James A. Randell Volunteer Director
Information Technology Director, Oklahoma Department of Human Services
James has been an avid runner for about eight years. His love for running started out at a 10-minute mile and at his peak, a couple of years later, excelled to a six-minute mile. Though the 6-minute mile has long passed, James still enjoys a good run and puts in an average of 30 miles a week. James got into triathlons about six years ago when a friend from the OKC Triathlon club asked him to attend a meeting. Since then James has found new loves in cycling and swimming (although swimming could be considered more of a “love - hate” relationship).
James is a charter member of the Redman Triathlon and has served as the Volunteer Director for the past two years. James has his own photography business (www.jarandell.com) where he shoots many of the local running, triathlon, and duathlon events when he’s not competing.
Martha Royall Transition Director
Pediatric Nurse Practitioner
This will be my 8th year involved in triathlon. I have always been a runner who has cross-trained by both cycling and swimming. I finally decided to put it all together and completed my first sprint triathlon in 2000. Since that time I have competed in sprint through ironman distance races. After completing Redman full in 2005 I couldn’t resist becoming involved behind the scenes in one of my favorite races!

2010 Assistant Race Director (On-Site Logistics) 2005-2009 Run Course Director Environmental Analyst/ Plutonium Extraction Consultant
Ultra/Trail runner, Adventure Racer, basically anything that is a Challenge. I have been the Run Director for REDMAN since it began. I enjoy working behind the scenes and making things happen. I feel that all of us are obligated to give some of our time as volunteers to support our sports. “Great is the road I climb, but the garland offered by an easier effort is not worth the gathering.”
Melissa StoneRun course Medical RoverRegistered NurseI am an avid trail and Ultra runner. I have either participated and/or volunteered for Redman since it's beginning. It is a wonderful event and I enjoy most just meeting all the athletes who come to participate. "If you limit your choices only to what seems possible or reasonable, you disconnect yourself from what you truly want, and all that is left is a compromise. " Robert Fritz
Stephanie Williams2010 Assistant Race Director (Food/Expo/Awards/Banquet/Wearables)I work as a Licensed Professional Counselor in my private practice in Edmond, Oklahoma. My favorite sport would definitely be eating, which is why it makes sense I would be the food director. But when I am not eating, I enjoy sailing, dancing and spending time with my husband and our yellow lab. I also enjoy swimming, biking and running. While I have no interest in doing all three in one day, I do admire all of those who compete in triathlon. My husband, Chap, is a triathlete and I have always spent my time at his races volunteering, to keep from being bored and because I really like volunteering. I am not sure how I actually got suckered, I mean involved in volunteering with the Redman, but I am glad I did. I enjoy working with this great and fun group of people who are all working towards a common goal of putting on a quality race and supporting amazing athletes.
David (Dave) Wood Race DirectorDirector of Operations, Wine, Beer & Spirit Brokerage & DistributorI’m an off-road multi-sport athlete (Trail Running and MB are my favorite). There’s nothing better than running or biking through a pine forest, or along a hillside and stopping to take a look at the incredible nature below. I’m involved with Redman, because I strive for balance in my life; volunteering and giving to the community are part of that balance. What better way to be involved with your community than to work at something that helps to exemplify fitness and health. And life doesn’t get any better than to be able to witness the accomplishment, perseverance and triumph at the finish line.

I am a trail running convert. Much easier on the aging knees! I have been married to Dave for 26 years. We have two great kids Michael and Brian! I work with the Redman organization, not only so that I can see my husband, but I also love being around on race day and feeling the buzz of the event and competition.
